"And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew." - Genesis 4:25
Eve was the first woman to ever wrestle with real pain, real depression, and real brokenness. She had lent her ear to the enemy, and with Adam's consent, it led to the worst possible destruction - the fall of humankind. Adam and Eve were originally created in the image of God, but after the fall their nature was changed. And from then until now, every child that is conceived is born into sin, the likeness and the image of Adam and Eve.
As a result of their sin, Eve's son Cain killed her son Abel. I cannot imagine the pain she must have felt. she did not just lose one son. Abel was dead, and Cain might as well have been dead. he was there, but he was not there. He became a fugitive. I have often wondered what emotional pain Eve must have gone through.
Eve no doubt beat herself up for the personal failure that caused her world to be turned upside down. But just when she thought it was all over, God was not finished yet. God allowed her to give birth to another son. They named their son Seth. The Hebrew word for Seth is "sheth" and its derivative root is "sheeth" which literally means "to put in place, or to appoint." The word implies a "substitute" or a replacement. Seth means substitute, which replaces what was lost.
God has a Seth for you. Everything the devil has stolen from you, God wants to replace it. The replacement is your substitute, and He is Jesus. Whatever has been taken from you can be returned to you through God's substitute, Jesus.
"When all hope is lost, look for God's substitute."
