What are the Characteristics of Discernment?

Beloved, in this season, the people of God are going to experience unprecedented favor! We are examining the Word of God to discover what He favors, and bringing ourselves into alignment with the Word of God. When we bring ourselves and our lives into agreement with God’s Word, we are positioned to receive His favor – triple favor! Are you ready? I hope so, because God is at work, and He has chosen you for such a time as this!

"And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man."
Luke 2:51-52

Jesus increased in wisdom, stature and favor as He grew. As you and I grow in Christ, we mature spiritually. One of the characteristics of Jesus’ maturity we should strive to model is wisdom. Wisdom attracts the favor of GOD.
Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord, through which discernment can develop in a growing believer. Discernment is not only a spiritual gift bestowed by the Holy Spirit when it’s needed; discernment is a crucial element of godly wisdom that mature believers walk in.
Discernment is keen perception or judgment (according to the World English Dictionary). It is to understand the plans, intent, thought or motive. Discernment goes beyond the obvious to hear the spirit behind things that are said or done.

Discernment flows out of the fear of the Lord. People who do not walk in the fear of the Lord become calloused in their ability to discern. Self-dependent people are likely to lose the fear of the Lord, causing the sharpness of discernment to be lost.

There are 3 characteristics of discernment that you must pray and strive to obtain.

These godly characteristics are blessed by Him. He will put His favor upon you!

A person of discernment is not easily swayed by what they hear, but by what they see with their inner eyes.
Many times, we will pick up on subtle things, but we rationalize it away or the persuasiveness of others wipes out what we were starting to perceive in the spirit.

We must not allow others or our own logic to sway what God is trying to reveal to us in the Spirit.

As Ephesians 1:17-18 states:

“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory,
may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened;
that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,”

Because a discerning believer is relying on the eyes of the Spirit, they separate emotions from reality. They have the self-control it takes to restrain themselves from getting caught up in a “knee-jerk” reaction to a situation.

A second characteristic of a discerning, wise and favored believer is they take nothing at face value.

They understand that things are not usually as they first appear. By using God-given observation, and hearing what the Spirit is saying, a discerning believer can get a better “read” on a situation than what anyone will ever come right out and say.

“My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:
2That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.”
Proverbs 5:1-2

The third, and maybe most important characteristic of a discerning believer, is prudence.

Prudence means “exercising sound judgment.” Prudence is when a wise decision is reached through discernment or critical evaluation. It is the ability to make the right decisions at tough times. Prudence makes the difference between disaster or victory!

Prudence, in the worldly realm, carries an almost negative connotation. Having prudence does not mean you are a “stick in the mud” – it means you are not a fool! Satan does not want us to lay hold of prudence – he wants us to be fools and die in the pit of bad decisions.
“The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways,
but the folly of fools is deception.”
Proverbs 14:8

Is your flesh hurting yet? Ouch!! Mine is, just writing this to you. In order to be able to handle what HE has for us, we’ve got to get this down in our Spirit!

Here are some qualities right out of the Word of God of the prudent (wo)man:

“A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult.”
“A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly.”
Proverbs 12:16 & 23

“A prudent man heeds correction.” Proverbs 15:5

Beloved, we must have prudence if we are going to be trusted with the overflow of blessings God has for us! Can you handle the blessing of Almighty God? Let’s get this quality in our spirit so we can be entrusted with the things of God!
In this season, the people of God are going to experience unprecedented favor! Opportunities we would have never found, promotions we could have never earned, blessings we could have never worked for in years are coming our way!

Let’s bring ourselves into alignment with the Word of God and become people of wisdom, prudence and discernment. We can rely on the Spirit’s help. With God, all things are possible! I want you positioned to receive His favor – triple favor! Are you ready?

God is at work, and He has chosen you for such a time as this!
