A Clean Slate
“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve, whether the god’s which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land ye dwell: BUT AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE, WE WILL SERVE THE LORD!” –Joshua 24:15
When we are faced with our decisions in life, our choices affect our outcome. The decision to believe in Jesus Christ and make Him the Lord of your life is the most important decision you will ever make. This decision affects where your soul will spend eternity – in heaven with Jesus, or in hell, which was intended for the devil and his fallen angels.
The Blood…the DNAThe children of Israel were being given a choice we will all be faced with at some point. Who are you going to serve? Are you going to serve the idols of your ancestors, or will you serve the Lord, who changes your DNA to be engrafted into the family of God? In this question to the children of Israel, they were given an option: serve the Lord, or don’t. We are faced with a similar choice, although our palate of options has been upgraded with a more perfect promise and covenant with God. Because of the blood of Jesus, we have the power to defy the DNA passed to us and to become more like Him. But we have to get a “clean slate” first. The clean slate is salvation, and we receive it because of the new DNA in Jesus’ blood!
The children of Israel were given the choice to serve the Lord, or not.. with the condition that the future generations would either be given blessing or cursing.. based on their choices.
“The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
Everything in the Old Testament was based on what you earned. Whatever you earned, you passed right on down to your children, and your children’s children…
“But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.”
Although we are given a higher covenant, this principle is still in operation. The fact that we are in the New Testament does not mean the principle of generational blessing and cursing is done away with – Jesus came to fulfill the law – not to do away with it.
“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.”
Jesus made it clear to them that the principles in the Old Testament would still be in operation. However, the difference is that He fulfilled all the law and set the prisoners free.
A Clean SlateGenerational blessings and cursings are the reason why we have to be born again with the DNA of Jesus. God becomes our Father in heaven, and we are given His DNA, the mind of Christ, the spirit of God, and the power to change our very DNA by obeying the Holy Spirit!
At salvation, we are given a clean slate. At the cross an exchange took place.. divinely ordained by God. Jesus was punished that we might be forgiven. Jesus was wounded that we might be healed. Jesus was made sin with our sinfulness that we might be made righteous with His righteousness. Jesus died our death that we might share his life. Jesus was made a curse that we might receive the blessing. Jesus endured our poverty that we might share his abundance. Jesus bore our shame that we might share His glory. Jesus endured our rejection that we might enjoy his acceptance. Our old man died in Jesus that the new man might live in us. Jesus took our tainted DNA and spilled His blood that we might have a clean slate and NEW DNA in Him!
All these exchanges can be summed up in one grand, all inclusive word – SALVATION! “Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all of His benefits”..
There is more to your “salvation” than simply “going to heaven.” I want to talk to you about that – but I will leave you with this thought –
In John 1:12-13, the Apostle says, “…those who have been born-again through receiving Jesus, that God has given them, “the right to become children of God.”
That word “right” means authority. So, at “new birth”, you receive the AUTHORITY to become a child of God. Authority is effective only if it is exercised. The potential of the “new birth” / salvation = is unlimited – BUT, the actual results depend on the exercise of authority that goes with it. Jesus wipes your slate clean, but its up to you to pursue your highest calling in Him. Its up to you to become a child of God by serving the Lord in all your daily decisions. Serving the Lord in all your daily decisions is only done by obeying the Holy Spirit – keep it personal, not legalistic. Do whatever the Spirit of God tells you to do through His Word and by the still small voice of His Spirit, and your DNA will change, leaving a legacy to a thousand generations.
Who will you serve?
